Learning Goals

I recently completed the Provider's Guide to Culture and Quality Self-Assessment Quiz. I started the quiz with optimism because I thought that I would do well. After all, I have been working in healthcare for 13 years and care for a diverse patient population. How hard could it be to get a good score?
I was in for a rude awakening when I received my score. I only answered 60% of the questions correctly. I reviewed my answers on the quiz and read the correct answers. I was incorrect answering questions about three topics on the quiz. I have three learning goals based on my incorrect answers. First, I need to evaluate how I treat patients based on my prior assumptions and prejudices. I let my personal prejudice effect how I tread my patients more than I realized. I asked myself, how are my feelings toward my patient effecting how I act during his visit? Second, I should learn ways to better understand the patient's medical history, better explain a diagnosis and make the patient feel comfortable during the visit. I found out that I may not be communicating effectively or making the patient feel at ease based on the quiz. I did not know that body language could be interpreted so many ways. Finally, I will learn how to talk to the patient and his/ her family. This will help me determine normal practices in the patient's culture in regard to topics such as healthcare decisions and diet.
I will reach these goals by critically evaluating my current practices and using information available to better my understanding of other cultures.
